Imphal, October 19 2022:
Under the aegis of Nupi Samaj, Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) and Nupi Samaj jointly organised sit-in protests at Kumbi and Upokpi Bazar on Wednesday demanding immediate revocation of the decision to legalise liquor in the state.
Placards inscribed with slogans like 'Is legalised liquor not harmful to health', 'what is hygienic liquor?', 'Is it right to campaign war on drugs by legalising liquor?', 'Will there be no crime if legalised liquor is consumed?, 'Stop legalising liquor', etc., were put on display during the protest demonstration.
CADA president Hijam Priyokumar and Drive secretary Mayengbam Budhi Singh addressed the protesters on the ill effects of liquor consumption on individuals as well as the society.
Meanwhile, members of Nupi Samaj, NIMPAL, Langthabal Kunja Mayai Leikai Meira Paibi, Divine Life Club and CADA Imphal West District Committee staged sit-in demonstration at Langthabal Kunja Keithel Macha while Nupi Samaj, Mana Ingkhol Women Welfare Development Association and CADA jointly organised another sit in protest at Mana Ingkhol.
A similar protest was also staged by Nupi Samaj, Lamsang Branch and CADA along with locals at Lamdeng Khunou community hall.
During the protest, the participants demanded withdrawal of the decision to legalise liquor and questioned whether liquor will be allowed for consumption by their wards/children if it is legalised one.
Liquor has never done any good.
Every locality has been affected by addiction, many have died due to it and numerous others are on their dead beds, the protestor pointed out, while denouncing the decision to legalise alcohol in the state.
