Committee formed to preserve rivers, mountains

With the stated objective to prevent quarrying of stones from Ingourok River and its headwaters, local meira paibis, village committees and clubs convened a joint meeting at Shikhong Bazar on Thursday and formed a committee named 'North Eastern Environmental Protection Committee'.
In a release, Committee member Asem Tampakleima informed that several resolutions were adopted during the meeting for preservation and protection of rivers and mountains, including prohibition on use of machines in quarrying of stones from rivers and extraction of soil from of the hills with effect from April 21 .
It also demanded that those involved in threatening the people actively working in protecting the environment should clarify within two days.
She further stated that the committee has made the people aware about the situation and urged villages residing in areas where the river originate namely Heinganglok, Sotun, Leihaoram, Mathak Khaaran and Sada Lungthar to support the movement for protection of the rivers and mountains.
Tampakleima further exhorted the people to support their initiative for protecting the environment.
