Imphal, October 15 2024:
Human rights activist Jodha Heikrujam said he has urged for sending a fact-finding team of the United Nations (UN) to Manipur to look into and investigate the conflict in Manipur lingering for more than 17 months.
Jodha addressed the 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council held recently in Geneva, Switzerland.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club Tuesday, Jodha said he drew attention of the United Nations during the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council on Government of India's inability to resolve the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur and urged UN officials to despatch a fact-finding team to Manipur.
While claiming that he shed light on the ethnic crisis gripping the state at the UN session, Jodha said government of India should not deviate from the commitment given when then sovereign Manipur merged into the Indian dominion.
Despite repeated assurances by Union home minister Amit Shah that territorial integrity of Manipur will not be compromised, the state is almost divided.
Desperate situation faced by civilians in Manipur after repeated attacks by Kuki militants armed with sophisticated weapons and devastating impact of the crisis were also highlighted at the UN session, Jodha said.
While claiming that he addressed the UN session twice, Jodha said the first statement dwelt on plight of the people displaced by the conflict and presently putting up at relief camps and sought financial assistance from the UN for the displaced community.
The second was on the lack of attention and support from the Government of India on resolving the crisis, Jodha said, while informing that he contributed his mite for commencement of the dialogue process among the legislators of Manipur in New Delhi.
