Kuki militants continue torching Meetei houses

Jiribam, June 09 2024:
Despite deployment of additional numbers of state and central forces suspected armed Kuki militants continued to torch abandoned houses belonging to Meetei community, freely, with videos and photographs of the same widely circulated on various social media platforms.
Two Meetei houses and a police check post were also reduced to ashes on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
The two houses in Nunkhal village under Sonapur gram panchayat in Jiribam district were left abandoned following outbreak of violence in the district between the two communities.
The police check post is also located in the same area.
It may be mentioned that tensions gripped the two communities following the murder of one Soibam Sarat by suspected Kuki militants on June 6 evening.
So far, 75 houses including a farm house belonging to Meetei community, two police check post and a forest beat office have been reduced to ashes by Kuki community.
While the Meetei community residing in the district have expressed deep concern regarding inability to contain the violence despite presence of large number of security forces, many locals, especially from villages bordering Kuki settlements have fled to safer places.
