Imphal, February 04 2025: Chandel Naga People's Organisation (CNPO) has announced conduct of a mass rally cum imposition of 12-hour total shutdown from 6 am on February 12 to protest construction of border fencing and scrapping of FMR along the Indo-Myanmar border by the central government.

As per a release of CNPO, the mass rally will be held at Chandel district headquarters while the total shutdown will cover Naga areas in Chandel and Tengnoupal districts.

The decision to launch the agitation was collectively taken by CNPO, tribe Hohos, NSUC & NCAC at its general body emergency meeting held on February 3, it said.

CNPO, representing 11 Naga Tribes of Chandel, fervently appealed to the public to uphold the said decision, extend fullest cooperation and take active part in the democratic protest.

Meanwhile, a massive protest was organised yet again on Tuesday at Lonpi and Moltuh villages under the aegis of the Committee on Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing to oppose the Indian government's proposal to construct a border fence between India and Myanmar.

The protest was carried out in collaboration with local women, villagers, and chiefs of border villages.

A significant number of villagers from various settlements along the border belt participated at both protest sites.

Kuki Chiefs' Association, Khengjoy Sub-Division general secretary Thangzamang, stated that since May 3, 2023, residents have relied on cross-border access for their essential daily needs.

He emphasised that the construction of a border fence would lead to the separation of families and communities who share deep social and cultural ties across the border.
