GRPC bans JCB operation in Gundung river, slaps huge penalties

The Gundung River Protection Committee (GRPC), in its determined and selfless attempt to protect and preserve the Gundung River, restricted the use of heavy machineries like JCB for any proposes along the river and warned of huge penalty upon violators.
Nehkam Kipgen, general secretary, GRPC recalled the resolution adopted during the joint meeting of all village chief along the Gundung river and labourers working in the river on August 13 last year and its implementation since then, with an aim to preserve and protect the river.
He also recalled the restriction of quarrying in the river using JCB, fishing with electric current or dynamo and prohibition of quarry labourers to encroach or work near or at the base of paddy field and residential areas.

He said that thousand labourers work hard and engage in the quarry activities along the river during daytime and when heavy machineries are used in the quarry, the labourers are affected economically, apart from exceeding the damage in the river.
He further said that no one shall engage heavy machineries including JCB in making roadway for the public through the river without prior consultation with the committee.
The GRPC secretary also warned that, as resolved in the joint meeting, the Gundung River Protection Committee will be compelled to impose a fine of Rs 30,000 to any violators while adding that the GRPC will strictly monitor any activities along the river.
