In a first, RIMS successfully conducts Kidney transplants

In a first for the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Imphal, the hospital has successfully conducted kidney transplant surgeries on two patients.
The kidney transplant surgeries were conducted on a 39-year-old man and a 50-year-old man in early August.
The surgeries were successful and both the patients are recovering healthily, said RIMS Director, Professor G Sunil Kumar Sharma.
Speaking to the media at RIMS' Sushruta Hall, the Director said the institute's Nephrology Department had been preparing the groundwork for performing a kidney transplant surgery for the last 3 years.
Performing kidney transplant surgery requires specific permission and clearance, and as such a Transplant Committee was formed to oversee the necessary framework and legal issues, he said.

The RIMS Director said the kidney transplant surgery on the 39-year-old man was conducted on August 8, and the donor was the patient's 23-year-old brother.
The Director said the 39-year-old had been undergoing kidney dialysis at RIMS since the last 2 years.
He was kept under observation for about a month at RIMS to prepare for the surgery.
The kidney transplant surgery was conducted successfully on August 8, said Professor G Sunil Kumar Sharma.
The second patient is a 50-year-old man and the donor is his 49-year-old wife.
The kidney transplant surgery was performed on August 9, said the Director.
Both the patients are recovering and they may be discharged soon, he added.
While buying medicines may have cost some money, the Director informed that the surgeries were performed by the Hospital free of cost.
While it cost a patient around Rs 5 lakh per surgery, CMHT (Chief Ministergi Hakshelgi Tengbang) covered around Rs 2 lakh, he said.
The Director lauded the Nephrologists, Surgeons, Urologists and Anaesthetists team who were involved in the surgeries.
He also thanked the Director of Health for giving permission for performing the surgeries.
He appreciated MOHAN Foundation and Transplant coordinators for their support.
Mentioning some achievements of RIMS, the Director said the institute is working to improve its position in the Institute of National Importance (INI) ranking and become one among the top 50 .
RIMS Medical Superintendent Prof Nepram Sanjib, Heads of various Departments and doctors involved in the surgeries attended the press meet.
