Clean Imphal River continues in Kpi with participation of various CSOs

Kangpokpi, October 14 2022: As part of the "Clean Imphal River Campaign" the Forest Department, civil society organizations of Kangpokpi, and the district police jointly embarked on cleaning the Imphal River, locally known as Gundung on Monday.

Participants from the Forest Department, CSOs and the district police cleaned the litter along Koubru Laikha stretch of Gundung as the spot is a popular picnic spot and there is a lot of littering around the area.

The litter along the river and the picnic spot were collected and disposed.

Earlier, before the joint initiative of cleaning the river, the CSOs of Kangpokpi and the Forest Department had a friendly football match at dreamland turf at Champhai in connection with the celebration of 67th Wildlife Week, 2022 celebration while also organizing an awareness seminar on the protection and conservation of the wildlife of the State at T Waichong on October 7 as part of the wildlife week celebration.

Divisional Forest Officer, N Ganesh while highlighting the importance played by rivers in the State said that Imphal valley is entirely dependent on rivers flowing from the hills and it has become very important that these rivers be given proper attention to prevent future water scarcity.

He also said that protected rivers improve water quality, provide a safe place for recreation, and clean sources of drinking water.

The officer continued that by improving safe access to local rivers, communities are also able to experience the benefits of recreation.

The DFO then appealed to the public not to throw garbage or litter river banks and to be responsible picnic goers while adding that it is the duty of everyone to look after the earth's resources.

Meanwhile, the Thadou Inpi also joined the Clean Imphal River Campaign from Kalapahar to Koubru Laikha under the state Government's River Rejuvenation Programme.

The Thadou Inpi's initiative was endorsed and supported by the Thadou Women Association, Kalapahar Gorkha Youth Association, Keithelmanbi Village Authority, Keithelmanbi Youth Association, S Molnom Village Authority, S Molnom Youth Club and the Kuki Football Academy.

The Thadou Inpi organized the cleanliness drive along Imphal River from Kalapahar to Koubru Laikha stretch in collaboration with the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change and Water Resources Department.

Altogether, more than 300 volunteers including 120 volunteers from Kalapahar, 62 volunteers from S Molnom village, 48 volunteers from Keithelmanbi, and 70 volunteers from Kuki Football Academy took part in cleaning the litter, plastic bottles, and other debris from Kalapahar to Koubru Laikha stretch of Imphal River with the help of machineries such as three JCBs, one DI and three tippers.
