Slur casts on school building quality

Imphal, November 11 2009: Allegations have been raised that there is lack of quality in the construction of a school under the funding of MSDP/MOBC in New Canaan Village of Ukhrul district.

A delegation of Elders' Forum of New Canaan Village, which went to inspect the construction work of Tangkhul Orient Public Junior High School building, has also reportedly detected various other anomalies.

Talking to mediapersons in this connection, Rammaso Muivah of the Elders' Forum contended that the quality of school building, which is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 15 lakhs, is way below the specifications mentioned in the blue print.

Though there should be two doors in each of the six class rooms, only one door has been constructed and instead of the RCC pillars, bricks have been used with one iron rod of 10 mm in the middle of each pillar, they contended.

Similarly, in the partisan and plinth beams, only three iron rods of 10 mm each instead of the required 12 mm iron roads have been used, Rammaso informed, adding that it appears that the contractor has not shown the blue print of the work to the labourers.

Furthermore, Rammaso alleged that contractor also made the villagers to carry out the ground levelling of the school but no roller have been used after levelling of the ground.

He pointed out that though established in 1968, Tangkhul Oriental Public Junior High School at New Canaan village has been upgraded to the status of an aided school after much lobbying with the Government.

But it has not been having a proper building of its own.

Construction of the school building has been finally taken up after another several rounds of lobbying and it is not sure after how many years, the Government would agree to construct another school building in the village.

So lack of quality control in the ongoing construction work would be to the great dissatisfaction of the villagers, Rammaso observed, while drawing the attention of the authority concerned to the matter.
