Imphal, January 03 2023: Notwithstanding the State Government's repeated claim that it has been working hard to bring uniform development across the State, Uran Chiru village, located just around 14 Kms away from the State capital has been suffering from extreme underdevelopment due to the Government's indifference.

Uran Chiru village inhabited by minority Chiru tribe falls under Lamlai Assembly segment in Imphal East district.

There is just one UJB school in the village and it has classes from I to V but the school building is no better than a cow shed.

There is no toilet or drinking water facility.

School management committee chairman and former general secretary of All Chiru Students' Union Jackson Chiru said that the village has had only three Government employees so far.

He said that the village still remains quite backward in education and all other sectors.

Apathy plagues Uran Chiru village

He opined that backwardness in the field of education is the principal reason for the underdevelopment of Uran Chiru village.

Altogether 50 students are studying in Uran Chiru UJB School and there are three teachers and a peon.

Jackson said that two villagers have been assisting the teachers in teaching the students in the capacity of voluntary teachers.

65 year old Thangnicham said that Uran Chiru village has a total population of little over 400 and most of the villagers are farmers and casual workers.

Although Uran Chiru village is not far away from Imphal, there is no health centre in the village.

In case of illness, the villagers have to go to the PHSCs of neighbouring districts/Assembly segments, Thangnicham said.

For the first time, the only approach road to Uran Chiru was black-topped recently and it turned out to be a landmark development for all the villagers, he said.

One prominent hardship of Uran Chiru village is unavailability of potable water, said one Pasonirgir.

He said that the villagers have been spending a substantial part of their hard earned money in buying drinking water from private suppliers.

He said that the villagers' economic condition is really pathetic.

Even though Uran Chiru village remains quite backward, the village is commendably clean and neat.

Apart from a waste collection tank, dustbins made of tins were seen installed at different points along the village road and other public places.
