LGBT+Youth Network observes decriminalisation of homosexuality

Imphal, September 02 2022: The British Deputy High Commission, Kolkata in partnership with Ya-All, an LGBT+Youth Network in Manipur, organized an outreach programme to commemorate the 4th anniversary of the abolition of Section 377 of IPC.

The outreach programme was held at Ya-All Shelter Space, Khurai today.

Notably, the Supreme Court of India on September 6, 2018 decriminalised Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code allowing same sex relations among consenting adults in private.

The event was attended by Nick Low, British Deputy High Commissioner to East and North East India; Diana Khumanthem, Imphal East Deputy Commissioner; Ngangom Uttam, Social Welfare Director and many representatives from the LGBTQ+ community as presidium members.

Speaking to the media, Nick Low remarked that the abolition of Section 377 of IPC was a groundbreaking and welcome step that would help the LGBT+ community in getting their rights.

Pointing out that India is one of the greatest democracies and most populous countries in the world, the British Deputy High Commissioner underscored the importance of giving equal rights to all genders.

Further stating that he is quite impressed on seeing a lot of positive energy at the event, Nick said that the commemoration will enliven the LGBTQ+ people in India and all over the world.

Addressing the gathering, Sadam Hanjabam, Ya-All founder and president said that the LGBT+ community still does not receive much acceptance in Manipuri society despite decriminalisation of Section 377 of IPC four years ago.

He continued that Ya-All hopes for an inclusive society where every gender and every person gets the human rights they are entitled to.

Highlighting the theme of the event, "Stronger Together", he exuded confidence that the LGBTQ+ community will get stronger when they reach out and collaborate more with each other.
