Imphal, January 17 2015 :
In a gala event organized at Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) premise on January 17, 24 children from various States including two from Manipur were nominated for National Bravery Awards 2014 (four being nominated posthumously).
The two awardees from Manipur are L.Brainson Singh (10), son of L Kishorjit Singh of Keishampat Hodam Leirak, Imphal and G Tooldev Sharma (9), son of G Bhavan Dev of Yaiskul Hiruhanba Leikai, Imphal.
It may be noted here that on the morning of May 20, 2014, Kishorjit had gone out while his wife was in the washroom.
Their six year old son, Wayengamba, was playing in the courtyard.
He was trying to make a long rope by connecting a piece of ordinary rope with a live wire let down from a loose connection on the wall when he got electrocuted.
Seeing his brother lying on the floor, Brainson immediately rushed to the spot and tried to move him but he too felt the shock.
Brainson kicked off the wire yet again which was lying beneath Wayengamba so violently that he fell down with a sprain on his leg and bruises on his cheeks, but he succeeded in his effort.
Thus, Brainson saved the life of his younger brother with his fearless action.
On the other hand, on the afternoon of August 15, 2013, G.Tooldev Sharma was watching television with his parents.
He went to the washroom near the bamboo fence of his courtyard where he noticed a 3-year old boy falling into the pond located 30 feet away from his house.
Tooldev immediately rushed to rescue the little boy from the 6 feet deep pond.
Catching hold of his shirt's collar with one hand, Tooldev held onto a bamboo pole on the side of the pond.
As he didn't know swimming, he shouted loudly for help.
Both of them were then pulled out by his parents and neighbours.
Tooldev displayed spontaneous courage in saving a precious life.
The National Bravery Awardees will be presented with the award by Prime Minister on the eve of Republic Day.
The awardees will receive a medal, certificate and cash incentive.
The children will take part in the Republic Day parade at Rajpat, New Delhi.
The awardees are granted financial assistance until they complete their schooling and ICCW also provides scholarship to those undertaking professional course.
PRO Defence Imphal Lt Col Ajay Kumar Sharma, being nodal officer for commentary for RD parade, attended the event and interacted with the children.
