Cervical cancer awareness programme held

Imphal, January 28 2025:
In connection with observance of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, the Hospital Based Cancer Registry (HBCR) and Population Based Cancer Registry (PBCR) under the Department of Pathology, RIMS, Imphal, organised a one-day cervical cancer awareness programme on Tuesday, at GP Women's College, Imphal.
The event, attended by 125 participants, included students and teaching faculties of the college.
Informing this, a statement of RIMS media cell said that the programme began with a welcome and keynote address by RIMS Department of Pathology head, professor Dr Sushma Khuraijam, who is also the principal investigator of HBCR and PBCR under ICMR-NCDIR, Bengaluru.
Dr Sushma emphasised the importance of awareness and preventive measures in combating cervical cancer.
The event featured informative talks by eminent speakers.
Department of Pathology professor Dr Laishram Rajesh, who is also co-principal investigator of HBCR and PBCR, delivered a talk on "Cervical Cancer Burden and Causes".
He highlighted the global and regional burden of cervical cancer and discussed its causes, particularly the role of HPV and other risk factors.
Another session on "Screening, Diagnosis and Vaccination of Cervical Cancer" was presented by Dr Sorokhaibam Babina, also a professor of RIMS Department of Pathology, and co-principal investigator of HBCR.
She elaborated on available screening methods, such as Pap smears and HPV testing, importance of early diagnosis, and HPV vaccination in preventing cervical cancer, the statement added.
