Dr Mark brought to state, KAMA demands capital punishment

Imphal, May 27 2022: International Human Rights Association, Manipur & Myanmar president Dr Mark T Haokip has been brought to Imphal by a team of Manipur police on Friday.

Dr Mark Haokip (37) is son of M Limkhosei Haokip of Molnom village, Churachandpur and he was arrested by a joint team of Imphal West district police and Delhi police on May 24 afternoon from a house at Kishan Garh, New Delhi.

Arrested Dr Mark was brought to Imphal in an Indigo Flight 6E 2615 from New Delhi and landed at the airport at about 10.50am on Friday.

Meanwhile, Kabui Mothers' Association (KAMA) general secretary Ranjita Golmei has said that Mark T Haokip should be given capital punishment as per his guilt in describing freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu as a criminal and not a freedom fighter.

Addressing media persons at KAMA office here Friday, Ranjita Golmei said that Mark T Haokip is a refugee and his post on social media describing freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu as a criminal without knowing history indeed was dishonouring of the people of the land.

A social media post of Mark T Haokip on November 23, 2001 describing Rani Gaidinliu as a criminal and tagging the post to Union home minister Amit Shah went viral on social media.

Accordingly, 10 civil society organisations of the state including IPSA, ACOAM Lup, PANDM, IPAK, Kanglamei, Kabui Mother's Association, KIL, CLK, Zeliangrong Union (Assam, Manipur & Nagaland) and KSA lodged a complaint at Imphal police station on November 28 the same year to arrest Mark T Haokip for blemishing image of a freedom fighter.

Though he was not arrested during that time, Mark T Haokip has been arrested from Delhi few days back due to the initiative of CM N Biren, Ranjita said and demanded capital punishment be given to Mark T Haokip so that no freedom fighters is dishonoured in the future.

She also said that 10 CSOs might launch intense forms of agitations if capital punishment is not awarded to Mark T Haokip.

KIL president RK Sanahanbi, who also spoke at the press conference attended by leaders of IPSA, ACOAM Lup, PANDM, IPAK, Kanglamei, Kabui Mother's Association, KIL, CLK, Zeliangrong Union and KSA, said that dishonour of a freedom fighter indeed is dishonour of entire people of the land.

She also lauded government for arresting Mark T Haokip from Delhi.

Dr Mark Haokip has been detained in Imphal west police station.

He was arrested in New Delhi after he failed to respond to the summons issued to him by the police in connection with a case lodged against him.

Churachandpur district police had lodged an FIR against him under section 153-A/505(2) of IPC, related to promoting enmity between different groups or communities on grounds of race, place of birth, language or regional groups, etc., and statements creating or promoting enmity hatred or ill-will between classes.

The arrest of Haokip came at a time when there were already several protests taken up by different groups against the case against him.

Violent protests broke out in Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts fol lowing arrest of Dr Mark Haokip.

Mention may be made that Churachandpur district magistrate (DM) has clamped indefinite prohibitory orders under 144 CrPC in Churachandpur town following the public protest demanding the unconditional release of activist Mark Thangmang Haokip.

Around 10 protesters and three po licemen were injured when a scuffle that broke out in Churachandpur town after the protesters took out a rally demanding the unconditional release of Dr Mark Haokip while his supporters staged a rally at Kangpokpi district headquarters.
