Imphal, November 19 2024:
Joining the chorus of condemnation against violence in the state, Chandel Naga People's Organisation (CNPO) has decried the recent brutal acts perpetrated against women and children in Jiribam district.
In a statement, the organisation described rape, torture; and murder as "the most shameful and primitive act" and called for peace, understanding, and harmony among all communities in the state.
While noting that since outbreak of conflict on May 3, 2023, the magnitude of violence has worsened, impacting lives across Manipur, the CNPO expressed outrage over recent acts targeting innocent and vulnerable groups.
It called violence against women and children as "appalling, cowardly, and barbaric", referring to the recent incidents in Jiribam, where women and children were abducted from a relief camp and later found murdered.
"Victims were reportedly subjected to unspeakable acts, including rape, brutal beatings, and, in some cases, bejng burned alive," the CNPO mourned, adding that such atrocities are not only deeply inhumane but also painful to imagine, let alone witness in reality.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace and coexistence, CNPO urged all communities to reject violence and work towards restoring tranquillity in the troubled state.
The organisation emphasised the importance of unity and understanding in rebuilding trust among communities and expressed hope for an end to the ongoing bloodshed with everyone "giving peace a chance" .
