BJP workers accused of attacking rival candidate's house

Thoubal, October 10 2021: BJP workers allegedly opened fire at the residence of Wangjing Tentha A/C intending Congress candidate and Manipur Congress Committee (MPYCC) state coordinator Usham Manglem located at Kairembikhok Awang Leikai on Saturday around 8 pm.

Around 10 people who were at the residence were injured during the firing incident.

Speaking to media persons in this regard, Usham Manglem contended that around 500 workers of Wangjing Tentha A/C BJP MLA Paonam Brojen from Wangjing who came in both two and four wheelers stopped at his gate and fired several rounds at his residence.

During that incident, around 10 people attending an election-related discussion were injured, he claimed.

The perpetrators even tried to harass women, who came out on hearing the clanging of electric poles by locals, by trying to pull their phaneks (cloth) and snatch mobile phones, he alleged.

Even after a team of Thoubal police commando came to the spot immediately for controlling the situation, numerous BJP workers came in two and four-wheeler vehicles, Manglem narrated, while adding that the situation was put under control by the police after dispersing the unruly mob.

"It is unfortunate that BJP MLA Paonam Brojen intoxicated some youth of Wangjing, armed and sent them to murder people," he further alleged, while adding that there were three instances where some people came to his home and asked him not to contest the election.

Manglem opined that the MLA must be behind the latest act of violence upon realising that he will lose the election this time.

The elders of the youth who are supporting the MLA need to control their wards.

If the youngsters were released after intoxicating them then unwanted incidents might occur, he cautioned, while adding that the elders will surely worry if their wards get injured.

Expressing disbelief that the police did not arrest the youth who were wielding guns in front of them, he also quoted eyewitnesses as saying the police befriended the youngsters instead of arresting and punishing them for the crimes.

The inaction of the police, who are meant to protect and save the lives of the people, to arrest the criminals in front of them is highly deplorable, he said, and denounced alleged biasness of the police.

Few days back, there was also an incident where some people threatened a young married woman at her house taking advantage of the absence of male family members.

A written complaint was lodged at Thoubal police station in this regard, he informed.
