Imphal, January 07 2010:
The Manipur People's Party has drawn the attention of the government to the plight of the people of Thanga Kendra living in the villages around the Loktak lake particularly those residing in the Karang island because of the proliferation of phumdis in the lake.
The two thousand odd people in the Karang island has been the worst sufferer as the proliferation of phumdis in the last three months starting from October has badly affected their livelihood as they are no longer able to catch fish from the lake.
Moreover, the thickness of phumdis has restricted the mobility the island dwellers to a great extend making it difficult for them to sell their catch or buy essential items from the market, according to a press release issued by the general secretary, political affairs and local bodies, Manipur People's Party.
Thanga Heisnam, Chingkha, Samukol, Ithing and Ngaram are some of the other villages which have also been badly hit.
Lamenting the way the present government has completely ignored the near natural calamity befalling the people of the Thanga Kendra, the press note alleged the government is meting out step motherly treatment to the people of the area as if they are not citizens of this state.
The press note also urged the government to immediately open mobile fair price shops and hawkers to make available essential items at subsidized rates to bring relief to these affected people.
