Imphal, January 05 2025: Indian Red Cross Society (1RCS), Manipur State Branch and Transport Department jointly launched observance of National Road Safety Month 2025 at the MG Avenue office of IRCS Manipur on Sunday.

The function was attended by transport minister Khasim Vashum, secretary Michael Achom, director Dr Nivedita Lairenlakpam and IRCS Manipur chairman Narendra Ningomba as presidium members.

Speaking on the occasion, minister Khashim Vashum urged not to accord importance to connections when it comes to road safety and traffic violations.

He continued that drunk driving is the major cause of most road accidents, some of which have been fatal.

Thus, even if those violating the road safety are found related to ministers or those in seats of power, they should be treated and punished accordingly so as to deter them from committing any such violations in the future.

He also emphasised the need for coordination between the Transport Department, traffic police and the police with regard to road safety, while lauding the initiative taken up by IRCS Manipur in this regard.

IRCS Manipur chairman Narendra informed that as part of the month-long observance, one ambulance would each be stationed in Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Kakching districts for a year to assist in road accident cases.

Efforts will be made to take up similar initiatives in Chandel, Ukhrul and Tamenglong districts.

During the function, which was attended by IRCS volunteers from different branches, Transport Department officials spoke on road safety.
