Imphal, September 27 2021: JAC against the Brutal Murder of Athuan Abonmai convener Majabung Gangmei has informed that they have reached an agreement with the government for conducting post-mortem on Abonmai's body on Tuesday, but it will not take back the corpse until the issue is resolved and proposed agitation announced earlier by the JAC will continue.

Speaking to the media at Abonmai's Langol Tarung residence here on Monday, Majabung informed that post-mortem of the body was not carried out on Monday due to the state government transferring deputy commissioner and SP of Tamenglong instead of suspending them from service as demanded by the JAC, as well as spread of false news on social media that his body will be claimed.

After chief minister N Biren invited the JAC on Monday for talk, they met representatives of the CM during which the government was categorically told to arrest the culprits involved in the murder of Abonmai at the earliest.

The meeting also reached an agreement that the post-mortem of the body will be conducted on Tuesday at RIMS, but the body will remain at the mortuary until justice is delivered, he mentioned.

Majabung continued that the government has asked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to investigate the case but so far NIA has not given any affirmation regarding it.

The JAC will go forward with its proposed agitation, including blocking of NH 37 and NH 2 from midnight of Monday till September 29 and total shutdown in the state on the next day.

This is the first phase of protest and they will continue without any compromise, he asserted.

Majabung appealed to the public to support the fight for the justice, while clarifying that the protest will exempt power, water supply, medical and media.

Meanwhile, sit-in protests were staged at various places demanding justice to Athuan Abonmai on Monday.

Protests were organised by Tarung Women Society, youth club and Village Authority at Tarung community hall, Guigailong Women Society at Guigailong, Laimanai Women Society at Laimanai, Tharon Women Society at Tharon and Namthanlong Women Society at Namthanlong.

Speaking at the sit-in protest at Tarung community hall, Tarung Women Society former secretary Lanjean Gonmei condemned the murder of Athuan Abonmai and demanded the government to apprehend the culprits and punish them as per law of the land.

They will extend their support to the agitation being called by the JAC, she added.

On the other-hand, family members and relatives said that Abonmai was very much involved in politics and contested Manipur Legislative Assembly elections two times from Tamei assembly constituency as well as taking part in social activism.

The family members said Abonmai was born on April 27,1970 at Lamlaba village, Tamei sub-division, Tamenglong district and was living at Langol Tarung.

He is the eldest son of Namjinlung Abonmai and Ginbonliu Panmei and has a younger brother Paojoukbou Abonmai.

He married Philawon Ningshen and was a father of two sons and one daughter.

All of his children are still pursuing their education.

Abonmai had contested 7th Manipur Legislative Assembly Election as Federal Party candidate and again in 8th Manipur Legislative Assembly Election as BJP candidate from Tamei AC.

During his political career, he was BJP Manipur Pradesh ST Morcha general secretary and BJP Manipur Pradesh state executive member from 2002 to 2006.From 2008 to 2011, he was NCP Manipur Pradesh general secretary and NPF Manipur State general secretary from 2011 to 2014.He was also the general secretary of Naga Political Leaders Forum Manipur from 2015-17, along with Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur & Nagaland) president from 2017-2021 and later took up the post of advisor of the organisation.
