Imphal, February 23 2023: On the first day of the class XII examination-2023 which is being conducted by Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM) from Thursday, two candidates were expelled and their candidature cancelled.

The expelled candidates bear Roll No 19702 (science) and Roll No 26495 (science) with both expelled for impersonation.

The first was expelled from Chaoyaima Higher Secondary School, Thoubal and the second from Anallon Christian Institute, Chandel.

According to a COHSEM notification, both the candidates will be ba rred from appearing class XII examination for two years.

A COHSEM official informed that a total of 36,717 candidates including 18,336 females are appearing the exam at 120 different centres across the state.

Of the total candidates, 24,513 are in science stream, 11,391 in arts and 813 in commerce stream.

Imphal West district has highest number of candidates with 12,749 and Pherzawl with only 18 has least number of candidates in the district-wise break-up.

Meanwhile, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) expressed concern over non-enactment of penal law for impersonation and use of unfair means in state level examinations.

DESAM secretary (education & academic affairs) Thounaojam Somol Luwang informed media persons that a three-member team of the students' body inspected COHSEM conducted class XII examination at two centres in Thoubal namely Chaoyaima Higher Secondary School and Fancier Higher Secondary School.

According to Somol Luwang, the inspection team found candidates allowed to enter the examination halls without frisking and checking at both the centres and there were likelihood of candidates carrying electronic devices and mobile phones inside the examination halls.

After about 15 minutes of commencement of the exam at Chaoyaima Higher Secondary School, a student came to appear the examination but one candidate was found seated in the examination hall already in the same name of the candidate who arrived belatedly.

During questioning, the impersonator was identified as one Zial Haque son of Md Ashraf Ali of Lilong Dam Makhong, who is yet to clear class X examination.

As per Zial Haque's disclosure, he was sent by a student candidate from Lilong to appear the exam after handing over the school uniform and original admit card with promise of giving money.

Though the student seated inside the examination hall confessed to impersonation the invigilator on duty signed and verified the real candidate allowed him to appear the exam, Somol Luwang said.

Expressing concern over detection of impersonated student in the examination hall, the DESAM secretary asked as to what punitive action could be taken against the impersonator and stressed the need for having a penal law for examination which the DESAM has been demanding since 2020 .

Meanwhile, flying squad of Manipur Youth and Students' Union (MYSU) reportedly carried out inspection of examination centres on Thursday.

In a release, MYSO informed that during the inspection visit at Little Master English Higher Secondary School, Samurou and N Tomchou Higher Secondary School, Mayang Imphal, the team witnessed peaceful and fair conduct of the examination.

A total of 542 students out of 544 enrolled were found appearing the exam at Little Master and 444 students out of total 454 enrolled at the exam at N Tomchou Higher Secondary School, the release said and added it is very unfortunate that some students did not appear in the examination.
