Imphal, May 14 2024:
Police have arrested a 26-year-old man accused of fatally attacking his own mother on Tuesday.
The suspect, identified as Sanjit Das, allegedly wielded a butcher knife, hacked to death his mother, Kamei Madhu (60), wife of the late Ganesh Das, a resident of Sangaiprou Kabui village.
According to police reports, Sanjit, a substance abuser, had previously undergone treatment at a de-addiction centre.
Following the current crisis in the state that began in May 3 last year, he had been staying at home.
Eyewitnesses recounted a heated altercation within the household, prompting neighbours to rush to intervene.
Upon entering the residence, they discovered Sanjit wielding a butcher knife, chopping on the head of his mother, who was laying on the drawing room floor, with the door locked from inside.
Despite attempts to intercept, Sanjit fled the scene from the back door.
After alerting the local residents, they pursued the fleeing son to apprehend him.
With the assistance of police personnel stationed near St Joseph's School, Sanjit was overpowered and the murder weapon recovered.
A team of Lamphel police station, accompanied by forensic experts, conducted a thorough investigation of the crime scene.
Subsequently, the victim's body was transported to RIMS mortuary for post-mortem examination.
