CPI, MPP slam Shah's stand on SoO

Imphal, June 01 2023: CPI leader Dr Moi-rangthem Nara has termed the response of union home minister Amit Shah on the violation of ground rules of Suspension of Operation (So0) agreement by Kuki militants as unfortunate and said that the double engine government has failed.

Addressing a press meet at Irawat Bhawan here on Thursday, Dr Nara said that CPI was apprehension of ten-sion escalating in the state and requested the chief minister to convene an all political party meeting three months ago.

During the meeting with the union home minister, the party placed its proposal for all-political party meeting and also told him that the situation wouldn't have deteriorated had the home minister vis-ited the state earlier.

He also stressed the need for providing a sense of security socially, psychologically and politically in order to ensure safe reha-bilitation and resettlement of the displaced people.

Confidence building mea-sures will take time and it will require extensive efforts of the government.

During a press conference, the union home minister assured action against So0 cadres if there is violation of So0 ground rules.

Howev-er, he failed to acknowledge the violation of So0 ground rules by the militants, which is clearly evident from the incidents happening in the state since May 3, he said while terming his ignorance as un-fortunate.

CPI Manipur state coun-cil president Leishangthem Thoiren said that it is clear that the central and state govern-ment is responsible for the ongoing conflict in the state.

Even though late, the visit of union home minister Amit Shah and his meeting with CSOs and displaced people in different dis-tricts brought some respite from the violence.

The party hopes that Amit Shah will translate his assurances into action and control the situation in the state in order to restore peace and normalcy, he added.

Meanwhile, Manipur People's Party (MPP) general secretary Longjam Joykumar has said that Union home minister Amit Shah's visit to the state had no meaning as he continues to cite the high court ruling on ST status of Meetei/Meitei as reason behind the violence though it was a part of the first movement for Kuki homeland demand initiated by Myanmar based Kuki militants.

According to Joykumar, Amit Shah had in a function held at Guwahati cited high court ruling on ST status of Meetei/ Meitei as main reason behind eruption of com-munal violence on May 3.MPP and people of Manipur expected that Amit Shah would understand the real reason behind eruption of the violence when he arrived in the state but that did not happened and continued to cite the high court ruling as main reason for the violence, he said adding it was very unfortunate that Amit Shah continue to refer to the court ruling as the crux for the violence even after visiting different violence hit areas of the state.

Addressing media persons at party office Thursday, Joykumar said 10 out of 16 districts of the state are in the hills but the communal riots were reported only in Kuki dominated Churachandpur, Kangpokpi and Tengnoupal districts.

If the high court ruling was the reason for eruption of communal violence, why there was no violence in the remaining seven hill districts, Joykumar pointed out and maintained that the ongoing violence is part of the first movement for Kuki home demand initiated by Kuki militants.

This is well understood among people of the state and accordingly the Union minister should understand it, he added.
