'Mankind responsible for ecological imbalance'

International Day for Biological Diversity was observed today under the theme 'Biodiversity and Sustainable Tourism' by the Directorate of Environment at Manipur State .

Forests and Environment Minister Th Shyamkumar, who attended the observance as the chief guest, said that the day is observed across the world to promote conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
Exploitation of nature by mankind has resulted in ecological imbalance and that is why events are being held across the world to spread awareness on the need to conserve environment.
Minister Shyamkumar urged the Directorate of Environment to organise the day at various locations of the State from next year, in order to create mass awareness.
Shambhu Singh, Additional Chief Secretary (Forests and Environment, PHE, AR and DG-SAT) said, "Manipur was a bigger biodiversity hotspot when I first came here 32 years back.
He said that people of the State are solely responsible for destroying the biodiversity and added that eco-tourism is a concept which will generate revenue, employment and help in maintaining the ecology.
Professor W Vishwanath Singh, Department of Life Sciences, Manipur University also spoke at length about the history and importance of the observance.
