With a view to bring about economic growth in the State through production of fishes on large scale, the State Government will take up various schemes which will help in augmenting the production of fishes in the State, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Md Abdul Nasir has stated.
Minister Abdul Nasir was speaking as Chief Guest of the 13th Fish Farmers' Day held at the Directorate of Fisheries, Lamphelpat which was organized under the aegis of Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Manipur.
He further stated that Andhra Pradesh is a State which is famous for production of fishes in high quantity.
The production of fishes in Manipur also needed to be scaled up by using new and scientific technology and make the State self sufficient as far as fish consumption is concerned.
The Fishery Department would also render all possible support in this connection.
The production of fishes on large scale in Manipur would help in the growth of the State economy to a certain extent, because fish farming is a profession which not only gives sustainable amount of income to the fish farmer but also generate employment opportunities to others, the Minister added.
Delivering the Presidential address, Y Jugindro, Director of Fisheries, informed that Norway is the largest producer of fishes in the world and China is one of the leading producers.
Both the countries use new and scientific technologies to increase production of fishes.
Likewise, the fish farmers in Manipur should adopt new technologies for increasing fish production.
The fish farmers, who were sent to Andhra Pradesh for training by the Fishery Directorate earlier and were present on the occasion of 13th Fish Farmers' Day, informed that there are lots of differences in the method of rearing fishes used in Andhra Pradesh and Manipur.
The quantity of fishes produced from a farm covering an area of 1 hectare is much higher in Andhra Pradesh than in Manipur.
This is because of the fact that farmers in Andhra Pradesh use readymade fish feeds but in Manipur fish farmers use only cow dung and grasses as fish feeds.
With adoption of new technology, production of fishes in Manipur can be increased to a large extent, they added.
K Saratkumar, Director of Fishery Directorate, was also present on the occasion as one of the presidium members.
The position holders in the Fish Fair cum Fish Crop Competition organized by the Directorate were given awards on the occasion.
