Joint Committee demands revocation of Gazette on Handloom Director post

Imphal, September 23 2026: Demanding revocation of the Gazette Notification issued by the Government on August 28 regarding the post of Director, Directorate of Handloom & Textiles, the Joint Committee for Protection of Handloom & Textiles Directorate, Manipur has launched protest.

The Committee comprising Handloom Entrepreneurs, Textile Technocrats and Primary Weavers Cooperative Societies staged a protest demonstration shouting slogans in front of the Directorate office at Naoremthong today.

Speaking to media, handloom entrepreneur Sougrakpam Bhubon said it is unfortunate that the Government issued a fresh Gazette stating that MCS Category-I shall be Director of the Directorate by bypassing the Rules & Regulations issued on July 6, 2022 without any amendment.

The move is an attempt to destroy the valuable Handloom and Textile sector, he alleged.

He said Handloom & Textiles was earlier under Commerce & Industries but has been a separate Directorate since 2016 as it is a technical department.

Many degree holders have passed out from 10 technical institutes under Ministry of Textiles, Government of India and State sponsored institutes.

Posting nontechnical MCS and IAS officers as Director is a major reason for decline of the sector, he said.

Stating that Handloom & Textiles is the second largest employment provider in the State providing jobs to over 5 lakh people, he demanded that the promotion line for technical experts be kept at 100 percent.

If the demands are not fulfilled within 15 days, stakeholders will launch intense agitations to save the Directorate, he warned.

A memorandum of the protest has been submitted to the Governor, Chief Minister and Chief Secretary, he added.
