Imphal, December 20 2024:
In a move towards better paediatric cancer care in the state, Mother's Care Children Hospital and Research Centre has partnered with the American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Babina Speciality Hospital.
The two healthcare institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday for collaborative effort to provide advanced radiodiagnosis and radiotherapy services for children battling cancer.
The MoU was formalised during a ceremony held at Mother's Care Children Hospital and Research Centre in the presence of Centre's chairman Dr Kh Ratankumar, AOI Babina Speciality Hospital facility director Manas Majumder, management teams, healthcare professionals, and representatives from both institutions.
The partnership aims to integrate the specialised paediatric care services of Mother's Care Children Hospital with the advanced diagnostic and therapeutic expertise of AOI Babina Speciality Hospital to deliver comprehensive cancer treatment for young patients.
Speaking at the event, Dr Ratankumar referred to global statistics on paediatric cancer that around four lakh children aged 0-19 years are affected by cancer annually.
He stated that only about 30 per cent of children with cancer in developing countries have access to treatment, compared to 80 per cent in developed nations.
He shared that his hospital has encountered numerous cases of paediatric cancer, entailing the need for specialised care.
There are distinct differences between adult and paediatric cancer patients, with most conditions in children treatable if detected early, he said.
Dr Ratankumar expressed hope that the partnership would provide a robust framework for addressing paediatric oncology needs in the state.
The MoU outlined the collaborative efforts of the two institutions in delivering accurate cancer diagnoses through advanced imaging and diagnostic services, offering state-of-the-art radio-therapy tailored for paediat* ric patients, and conducting awareness campaigns to educate the public about the importance of early detection and treatment of childhood cancers.
AOI Babina facility director Manas Majumder expressed optimism about the collaboration, emphasising the potential to transform cancer care for children in the state by combining resources and expertise.
