Imphal, June 02 2013:
Highlighting some of the major illegal drug seizures that rocked the state in the last 7 months where high profile officials, family members of VIP and security forces were involved, Coalition Against Drug and Alcohol (CADA) has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh for his immediate intervention to stop the problem of drug trafficking in Manipur.
The attitude of the present Government of Manipur and its strategy and policy to tackle the problem of drugs lag behind than what is expected.
It remains at the most as mere spectator when the entire state is in the throes fire of drug and drug trafficking business, read the memorandum signed by Arambam Rabindra, President of CADA Head Office.
Manipur serves as the gate way to the Golden Triangle.
As such, the government needs to be ever vigilant and serious and sincere in its determination to check and counter check the ever expanding shadows of drug that make human life a pitiable one in this far corner of India, the memorandum said.
Referring to the 11th January, 2013 Tulihal Airport drug scam in which pseudoephedrine tablets worth Rs 1.4 crores was detected by Inspector K Ranjit Singh of Special Investigation Unit (SIU), the memorandum pointed out that the identity of the owner/s of the drug consignment has been kept undisclosed till today whereas SIU has been abolished, thus, giving room for raising many a questions in the mind of the people.
On the other major drug seizures, the memorandum highlighted the Pallel drug case in which Col Ajay Chaudhury, PRO of Defence Wing was arrested while trying to smuggle a large consignment of pseudoephedrine tablets on 24th February, 2013; arrest of Seikholen Haokip, s/o TN Haokip, a sitting MLA of Manipur Assembly and a group of 11 Police Commandoes who were caught by Thoubal Police Commandoes with a huge consignment of drugs while trying to smuggle it out to Moreh on 28th April, 2013 .
Such occurrence is happening very frequently, but the state government remains as a mere spectator when almost a large section of the government officials seem to involve in this abominable practice, the memorandum added.
Demanding to indentify the individual/group responsible for the episode of Airport drug scam and to give exemplary punishment, Rabindra also called upon the Prime Minister for intervention to revive the SIU and reinstate K Ranjit Singh.
