18,024 female employees in govt sectors in state

Imphal, December 06 2011: With the increase in the number of educated females in the state, the number of female government employees has increased considerably with around 18,024 females presently employed in government sectors.

According to official sources from the Department of Statistics only two girls of the state were enrolled in school in the year 1898-99.Gradually the number of girls getting admitted to schools began to rise and according to the census report of 2001, the number of educated women rose to 6,13,712, thereby increasing the number of female employees in government sectors to 18,024 .

The source also revealed that in 1960 the number of women employed in government sectors was only 183 (2.5%) .

And in the year 1968 there were 32 female employees in the Manipur Police Department.

In the year 1974 the number of women employed in government sectors rose to 1957 (8.5%) .

The source further revealed that according to the census report of 2001, the number of females employed in all the state government departments was 16,273 and those employed in the Central government sector 1751, with a total of 18,024 female employees both in Central and State government departments.

Among the 18,024 female employees in government sectors, 13.03% of them are first class gazetted officers, 7.05% of them are second class gazetted officers, 20.70% are grade III and 9.53% of them are grade IV .

With higher education, the status of women in the state has increased with a number of them employed as Professors, Directors of government departments, Judges in High Courts and in different countries of the world, it said.

It may be mentioned that after the admission of two female students in schools meant for boys only, the British, for the first time in the state, established a lower primary school for the girls in 1899 at Moirangkhom.

Then in the year 1935 the first High School for girls, Tamphasana Girls High School, was established and girl students began to appear in the Matric Exam in 1939.But unfortunately, due to the outbreak of 1st and 2nd WW, the number of female students admitting in schools began to decline.

After India got independence, the number of educated women in the state began to rise steeply.

In 1951 there were 6,962 educated women in the state.

The number of educated women has been increasing gradually and at present stands at 59-70%, the source said.
