Farmers in distress as hailstorm ravages crops

In the aftermath of widespread hailstorm wreaking havoc across the state, farmers in Phubala and Sunusiphai villages of Bishnupur district too have been left reeling from significant crop losses, in addition to damages caused to their homes and infrastructure.
During a visit to the affected villages, The People's Chronicle observed extensive damage, with many houses sporting perforated or blown-off roofs.
Additionally, vegetable farms bore the brunt of the hailstorm's fury, exacerbating the plight of local farmers.
One such farmer, Wareppam Shyam (53) of Phubala Mamang Tourist Lambi, faces the grim re ality of not only witnessing his home damaged but also endur ing significant losses in his farm, which Used to sustain his family's livelihood.
Cultivating vegetables across 12 hectares of farmland in Phubala and 40 hectares in Sunusiphai, Shyam invested approximately Rs 1.2 lakh, including labour costs, with an anticipated income ranging from Rs 5 to 6 lakh.
After harvesting paddy, he grows watermelon, pumpkin, cucumber, gourd, ash gourd, beans and sponge gourd in his farm.
Relying on loans procured from money lenders to finance his agricultural endeavours, Shyam finds himself burdened with the task of repaying his debts with interest from his anticipated earnings.
However, Sunday's hailstorm dealt a devastating blow to his farm, rendering it incapable of regrowth.
The severity of the damage has left Shyam grappling with the uncertainty of how to recoup his investments, with the crops irreparably ruined.
In addition to the agricultural losses, Shyam faces further distress concerning the condition of his home, with the hailstorm perforating its roof.
Struggling to provide shelter and sustenance for his family, Shyam expressed concerns over his inability to afford the necessary repairs.
He fervently appealed for expedited assistance from the government to alleviate his plight and that of other affected farmers in the region.
Shyam is not alone to face such distressing situations in the aftermath of Sunday's hailstorm as farmers across the state are also experiencing similar conditions hoping for adequate compensation from the government.
