Operation theatre, OPD block inaugurated

Imphal, March 05 2013: The newly constructed Operation Theatre and Out Patient Department (OPD) block building of the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Wangoi under Imphal West were inaugurated by Health and Family Welfare Minister Phungzathang Tonsing during a function as Chief Guest today.

Speaking at the occasion, Minister Phungzathang Tonsing said that the Operation Theatre and OPD block which were inaugurated today would provide many benefits to the people of Wangoi and its surrounding area even though the CHC still lacks some required equipments.

He assured that the government would put its best efforts in ensuring all the required equipments to provide the needed health care benefits to the people of the area.

The Minister recalled that W Nipamacha, who was the then Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly, upgraded the health centre to CHC from Primary Health Centre (PHC) in 1995 and now CHC would be equipped with 30 beds.

Assuring that the government would be appointing the required surgeons very soon, the Minister noted that Manipur is currently facing acute shortage of specialist doctors.

However, the government is making necessary arrangements by providing trainings to many doctors including 131 PG doctors.

Once their training is completed, the government will be able to fill up the required specialist doctors to a great extent.

Operation theatre, OPD block inaugurated

Expressing concern over increasing rate of cancer patients in the state, the Minister observed that consumption of tobacco products like Talab, Zarda, Khaini, cigarettes and unhealthy snacks and fruit-pickles from Myanmar and China, which come through Moreh, are the main reasons behind increasing cancer rate.

Considering this fact, the State Cabinet recently took a decision to ban tobacco products, cigarettes and unhealthy snacks and pickles imported through Moreh.

Minister Phungzathang Tonsing also urged the people of the state to give up the habit of consuming tobacco products and smoking cigarettes for a better and healthy Manipuri society.

Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Manipur Ram Muivah who attended the inaugural function as Special Guest, pointed out that after Assam, Manipur is leading the rest of the States in the Northeast region in terms of development in health sector.

Manipur alone has more than 2000 doctors and the improved health sector has attracted the attention of people not only from other Northeastern States but also from neighbouring countries like Myanmar.

Presided over by MLA of Wangoi A/C O Lukhoi, the inaugural function of the newly constructed Operation Theatre and OPD block building of CHC at Wangoi was also attended by IFC Minister Ngamthang Haokip and Director, Health and Family Welfare Dr O Ibotombi graced the function as Guests of Honour.
