Woman dies during delivery at Jiri CHC

Tension erupted at the Jiribam Community Health Centre today when a woman and the child she gave birth to, died after delivery.
Angered people demanded the suspension of the doctor involved in the case.
Mutum Ongbi Manisana Devi (27) wife of Arjun of Kalinagar under Jiribam PS was admitted to the Jiribam CHC yesterday around 2 pm for delivery.
She was attended by Dr Rita Devi, who had been looking after her since her pregnancy.
Till 8 pm yesterday, the doctor convinced the family that Manisana was normal and there were no complications.
At 10 pm, she was taken to the maternity room.
No information about her condition was passed on the family members even though they could see nurses and doctors consulting seriously around 12.30 am.
The family members requested Dr Rita to refer Manisana to a better equipped hospital if there was any complications.
Dr Rita however replied that the condition of the patient was normal.
It was around 2 am that the family members saw nurses taking out the dead bodies of the woman and baby she had given brith to.
Alleging that the woman and child died of the negligence of the doctor, residents of Kalinaga rose up today demanding an enquiry, and that all responsibilities must be borne by the CHC authority.
Later, they formed a JAC and demanded Dr Rita to pay compensation of ` 10 lakh to the family of the victim.
They also urged the authority to place the doctor under suspension or to be transferred.
With tension running high, armed police personnel have been detailed to protect the CHC where the dead bodies of both mother and baby are still lying unclaimed, the report received here said.
