Biswajit notes role of science in society's progress

Science and Technology minister Thongam Biswajit has stressed the importance of fostering scientific temperament among students to boost the state's scientific output.
Speaking as the chief guest during the inaugural session National Space Day Celebration 2024 held on Friday at the NIELIT Seminar Hall, Biswajit highlighted the crucial role of science and technology in advancement and development of the society.
Pointing out that modern technologies enable forecast of natural calamities and enhance comfort in daily life, with countries worldwide competing in this sector, the minister reminded that to achieve national development, it is essential to advance science and technology sector.
Biswajit also commended contributions of state's scientists in the sector and mentioned Raghu Ningthoujam's role in the Chandrayaan 3 mission.
Raghu's presence at the celebration event is expected to inspire students and ignite their curiosity in science and technology, he said and extended his best wishes to him (Raghu) for continued success in his future endeavours.
Despite having abundant mineral resources, Manipur remains underdeveloped due to underutilisation of these assets, Biswajit observed and stressed the need to leverage available resources for development, similar to Assam and Tripura, which have progressed by tapping oil and natural gas reserves.
Overcoming obstacles in mineral resource utilisation is vital to address state's developmental deficiencies, he maintained.
Highlighting the importance of National Space Day, the minister called for cultivating scientific temperament among students and encouraging them to pursue careers in science to contribute to the state's development.
The celebration jointly organised by Manipur Science & Technology Council (MASTEC) Imphal, North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC), Shillong, and National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Imphal also had the participation of Department of Science and Technology secretary Hungyo Worshang, ISRO HQ scientist-SG & deputy director Raghu Ningthoujam, NESAC Shillong head GSD scientist-SF M Somorjit, NIELIT director N Debachandra, and MASTEC director Dr L Minaketan as presidium members.
A quiz competition was also organised as part of the event in which TG Higher Secondary School secured the top position.
The team will represent Manipur in the North East Level Quiz Competition to be held in Guwahati.
