Imphal, May 10 2024:
All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM) have strongly denounced the threat and intimidation to AMWJU RTI Cell member and Imphal Times reporter Khumanthem Dhanachandra by some heavily-armed miscreants at his Naoremthong Laishram Leikai residence on Thursday around 8.45 pm.
A joint statement issued by AMWJU and EGM informed that an emergency joint meeting was held on Friday at Manipur Press Club, Koubru Hall considering the gravity of the situation and condemned the threat subsequent to a news report published by Imphal Times.
Calling intimidation and threat to journalists as an attempt to suppress freedom of press, the joint statement informed that around 10 well-armed miscreants who came in three four wheelers also told family members of Dhanachandra to come to a specific place in Imphal West within 10 am on Friday.
Urging the state government and authority concerned to take appropriate actions against those involved in threatening the journalist according to law of the land, the joint statement also cautioned of launching intense protest if the government fails to take actions against those involved within five days.
The two bodies further appealed against repeating such acts in future and exhorted all to abide by the Code of Conduct (local adjustments) of AMWJU.
If there is any disagreement over a news report, all concerned should provide room for talks with editor of the media firm or authority or with AMWJU or EGM instead of intimidating and threatening journalist, the joint statement added.
