Three held in polling station firing case jailed

The three people, who were arrested in connection with the firing incident in a polling station at Moirangkampu Sajeb on April 19, have been sent to judicial custody for 15 days by the Special Judge (NIA), Imphal East on Friday.
The three - Leichombam Jemson (34) son of late Arun of Thangmeiband Yumnam Leikai, Khumukcham Angamba (32) son of late Rajen of Sagolband Tera Khamnam Leirak, and Nongthombam Ratan (47) son of late Samungou of Phaknung Awang Leikai - were produced before the court on Friday with a prayer for judicial remand which the counsel of the accused trio objected and prayed for their release on bail.
In his submission, the special public prosecutor said that an elderly man was injured in a firing incident at 3/11 Moirangkampu Sajeb Upper Primary School polling station during the first phase election to the 18th Lok Sabha on April 19 .
Miffed by the incident, some locals vandalised the EVM.
As per the special public prosecutor, the perpetrators, numbering around eight, came in three vehicles - Silky coloured SUV, black coloured Bolero and a Honda IV-Tec.
After a chase, police intercepted the Honda IV-Tec near Sajiwa Jail around 2.30 pm and arrested three occupants of the car along with recovering one .32 pistol with eight live rounds from Khumukcham Angamba, and Rs 1.5 lakh in cash from inside the car.
However, police could not extract source of the cash from the accused persons.
It is said that Nongthombam Ratan had been arrested earlier on charge of being an overground worker of RPF/PLA.
So far, police have not been able to arrest the three's accomplices and as such, police need them in judicial custody for further questioning, the special PP maintained.
After hearing the special PP, the court remanded the trio to judicial custody till May 10 .
The court also treated ail application filed by the arrested trio as regular application and listed the same for hearing along with bail objection report and case diary on April 30 .
