Man shot at, women hurt, NPP candidates attacked
Source: Chronicle News Service

Imphal, February 24 2022: In what is suspected to be a case of pre-poll violence in Keirao AC, a man was shot at and two women sustained injuries while trying to stop a tussle which occurred around 8.30 pm Wednesday at Kyamgei Muslim Takhok Makha under Keirao constituency.

The man who was shot at has been identified as Md Shahudddin (44) of Kyamgei Muslim Takhok Makha.

He sustained a gunshot wound on his left leg and is currently undergoing treatment at Raj Medicity.

Meanwhile, the two injured women have been identified as Rahmatun (30) w/o Md Azad Khan and Memis (28) w/o Md Mohsin of Kyamgei Muslim Takhok Makha.

Both sustained minor injuries on their face and heads.

According to reports culled from the spot, Md Shahudddin, who sells vegetables at Irilbung bazar, was on his way home with his younger brother Md Mohsin, who is a police constable, in a KIA SUV car.

On reaching Takhok Makha, they came across an armed group of people, who startedattacking the vehicle.

They managed to flee the area and returned home but were confronted by National People's Party (NPP) workers.

During the scuffle, one of the NPP workers opened fire which struck Md Shahuddin.

Meanwhile, a report by Irilbung police conveyed that unidentified miscreants confronted Md Shahudddin and a fight broke out.

During the tussle, one Md Rakibuddin s/o Ayajuddin of Kiyamgei Muslim Awang Leikai, who is a police CDO of Thoubal District (Waroiching post), fired at Md Shahudddin.

An empty case of a 9 mm pistol was recovered from the scene and one Md Anas Shah (23) s/o Shuleiman of Kiyamgei Awang Leikai arrested.

On the other hand, unidentified miscreants fired several rounds at the vehicle of (NPP) Manipur vice president and Mayang Imphal AC candidate Urikhimbam Ramesh on Wednesday evening.

Recounting his ordeal during a press meet held at his Sekmaijin Thongam residence on Thursday, Ramesh stated that the unidentified armed miscreants fired several rounds and also pelted stones at his group consisting of 7 vehicles, while they were stopping to buy drinking water from a shop, located around 50 metres from the residence of BJP candidate K Robindro at Laphupat Tera Mayai Leikai.

The attack, which was basically an attempt on his life, left two vehicles damaged.

He condemned the incident and conveyed that he would file a complaint to ECI and other authorities concerned.

An NPP supporter named MA Latif, who was also present during the attack, condemned the attempts being made on social media to blame the attack on the NPP candidate and his group.

He then urged the authority concerned to look into the matter and prevent a repeat of the same in the future.

Meanwhile, another attack was carried out on NPP candidate when by two unidentified persons who came riding a two-wheeler near the residential gate of party's nominee Laitonjam Jayananda triggered a bomb blast on Thursday around 3 am.

Although no one was injured in the attack, a portion of the poll booth set up in front of the gate suffered some damages.

Speaking in this regard, Jayananda condemned the recent slew of attacks carried out against NPP candidates and their respective workers.

He then reiterated his request to the state home department and the Election Commission of India for taking up strict security measures and declaring Khurai a hyper sensitive zone, while questioning who will be held responsible for the attacks.

Khurai Konsam Leikai Khunai Kanba Nupi Lup also condemned the attack and urged all concerned not to repeat such acts in the future.
