MPP remembers 'Treaty of Yandaboo'

Imphal, February 24 2011:
The Manipur People Party (MPP) today remembered the signing of the "Treaty of Yandaboo" between the British East India Company and the Burmese King of Ava on this day in 1826, in a function held at its office at Statehood Square, Imphal.
Dr L Chandramani, former MPP president, who recently recovered from a prolonged illness, presided over the function in which MPP president Dr Nimaichand Luwang and vice president, former minister L Jatra were in the dais.
Former minister, Prof Gangmumei Kamei talked as resource person on the treaty.
Offering of floral tributes to Maharaja Gambhir Singh, who regained Manipur's freedom from the Burmese following the seven year devastation, Chahi Taret Khuntakpa, marked the commemoration function.
In his key note address, S Umananda gave the reason behind the observance of the day and said Maharaja Gambhir Singh with the help of the British had saved Manipur from a total devastation in the hands of the Burmese following their invasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Chandramani recounted details of the seven year devastation of Manipur from 1819 to 1826 which is still remembered as Chahi Taret Khuntakpa.
Prof Gangmumei Kamei talking as resource person said that after Gambhir Singh became the king of Manipur, he had expanded his territory upto Kohima in 1833 .
Manipur was not a party in signing the Treaty of Yandaboo as at that time Ava (Burmese) wanted to install Marjit Singh as King of Manipur instead of Gambhir Singh.
MPP president Dr Nimaichand Luwang and vice president, L Jatra also talked on the accounts of the treaty.
