Imphal, December 10 2022: International Human Rights Day was observed in different parts of the state on Saturday.

In Senapati district, Naga People's Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) along with Naga civil society organisations commemorated the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) observed worldwide as International Human Rights Day at Naga People's Organisation (NPO) conference hall.

The programme was attended by representatives of United Naga Council (UNC), Naga Women Union (NWU), All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM), NPO and Senapati District Women's Association (SDWA) .

In a statement, NPMHR pointed out that the UDHR, which was adopted in 1948, has a significant impact on the Constitution of India "as every citizen is guaranteed human rights" similar to the provision of the declaration.

"However, the signatory of UDHR, India unleashed a reign of terror in Naga country torturing and killing hundreds of innocent Nagas since it attained independence in 1947," it said.

The statement added that Nagas continue to endure the devastating impact of the "cynically device oppressive policy" of the Government of India.

Meanwhile, during the function, a two-minute silence was observed in remembrance of all Nagas who had "embraced martyrdom defending the rights and freedom of the Naga nation".

According to NPMHR, the participants of the programme discussed the "current dismal situations" as a consequence of continued promulgation of Armed Forces Special Powers) Act, 1958, and prolonged peace process with no solution till now.

They also pledged to work together to secure the "inalienable and indivisible rights of the Nagas".

On the other hand, New Life Foundation Manipur observed International Human Rights Day in Kangvai sub-division, Churachandpur district under the theme 'Dignity, Freedom and Justice for All' .

The programme was attended by Foundation secretary L Pishak, Nalon village chief Siempu and All Bishnupur District Working Journalists' Union president Y Samananda Singh as presidium members.

International Human Rights Day was also observed by District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) , Chandel and Moreh Legal Aid Clinic under the sponsorship of Manipuri State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) at Ex-serviceman Welfare Association office hall Moreh Ward No 9, Lhangkhichoi Veng.

The observance was attended by Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Moreh Sarungbam Mangaleibi, Kuki Women's Union & Human Rights, Moreh member Lambem Chongloi, Lhangkichoi Veng HTC unit IX chairman Thangtong Baite and secretary Mangthong Haokip as members of the dais along with other CSO leaders.

As part of the programme, prizes were distributed to winners of an essay competition conducted in connection with the observance.

Similarly, Campaign for Social Upliftment (CSU), Kangleipak Jiribam observed International Human Rights Day by organising a public meeting and a painting competition at RK Sanatombi Devi Vidyalaya auditorium, Jiribam.

The programme sponsored by MASLSA was attended by Jiribam former MLA A Biren Singh, Manipur State Cooperative Bank, Jiribam Branch manager A Thoiba Singh and advocate I Inaobi Devi as presidium members.

Advocate Khumukcham Chinglen, Manipur University Department of Law assistant professor Nameirakpam Brajakanta and advocate Sukham Premjit were also present at the function as resource persons.

During the programme, prizes were distributed to painting competition winners including 1st position holder Ayekpam Premananda Singh of RK Sanatombi Devi Vidyalaya, Jiribam; 2nd position holder Th Jesika Devi of New Life Academy; and 3rd position holder Mutum Alpana Chanu of Chingdong Leikai Upper Primary School and others.
