Chandel protest over non-repairing of deplorable road

The people of Chandel under the aegis of Chandel Naga People's Organization (CNPO), Naga Women's Union, Chandel and Naga Students' Union, Chandel held a protest condemning non-repairing of the 18 kilometre-long Chandel-Pallel road stretch that links with Imphal today.
Talking to media persons on the sideline of the protest, President of CNPO Gilbert said that Border Road Organization (BRO) has taken over the task of repairing the 46 kilometre-long road stretch from Pallel to Chakpikarong passing Chandel from State PWD in July, 2010.However, the 18 kilometre-long road from Chandel District Headquarters to Pallel has not been repaired despite several appeals and reminders to the authorities concerned.
Chandel people are the most backward owing to poor road connectivity.

The MLA of Chandel had even raised the issue in the State Assembly, but the Minister concerned replied that the State government cannot do anything as it was taken over by BRTF, he noted.
Gilbert appealed to the State government to look into the deplorable condition of the Chandel-Pallel road even if the work for repairing is entrusted to BRTF.
The President of Indo-Burma Sugnu Road Bus Owners' Welfare Association Chatukini pointed out that several reminders and appeals have been served to the authorities concerned to repair the road, but the road has not been repaired till date.
The Association would call bandhs and other forms of agitations in association with various civil organizations of Chandel if the road is not repaired within a short time.
Meanwhile, passenger vehicles plying along Chandel-Pallel Road stopped their services and joined hands with the people of Chandel in the protest.
They also submitted a memorandum to the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Oscar Fernandez through Deputy Commissioner of Chandel district Th Chittaranjan.
On the other hand, Tengnoupal area Naga Chiefs/Chairmen Association has stated that it would continue to impose bandh on National Highway No.102 and other important roads of Chandel district in protest against allocation of 25 percent of MGNREGS fund to Autonomous District Council.
