Women vendors protest, demand proper parking space

Thoubal, September 23 2026: Women vendors of Thoubal Keithel staged a protest today, demanding a proper parking space for the market.

The protest reportedly led to a tussle between the vendors and police personnel.

The tussle broke out when the women vendors came out and attempted to dismantle the roadside railings installed at the side of Thoubal Keithel along the National Highway 102 .

Three women vendors reportedly sustained injuries when the Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.

The injured women were taken to the District Hospital Thoubal and administered first aid.

Speaking in connection with the protest, women vendor secretary E Suhashini expressed discontent that a big market place like Thoubal Keithel has no proper parking space.

She raised concern that the absence of a proper parking space has been causing immense inconvenience to the vendors and buyers as well.

She further stated that the issue has been raised to authorities concerned including the then and current Deputy Commissioner, Municipal Council and even to the Thoubal MLA.

However no positive steps have been taken up so far, therefore the women vendors have been compelled to stage today's protest, she said.

She further appealed to designate or construct a proper parking space for Thoubal Keithel and a traffic point at the 3 way junction opposite to the Keithel by October and warned of intense agitation if the demands are not actualised.

Suhashini also condemned the actions of the police upon the protesting women vendors.
