Imphal, May 14 2024:
Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has declared that admission to colleges bereft of subject-specific teachers should be suspended till appointment of faculty members.
Addressing media persons at its Kwakeithel office, here, on Tuesday, secretary general Nongthombam Thoithoiba said that the decision to impose restriction in the admission process has been by DESAM in the interest of the student community while declaring that appropriate steps would be initiated in case college principals or department heads are found defying the same.
While pointing out that the decision is in compliance with norms of Manipur University, he also noted that many colleges in the state are entertaining admission beyond their intake capacity, resulting in shortage of teachers, inconveniences caused to the students and rise in cases of using unfair means during examinations.
Thoithoiba alleged that such unhealthy trend is being abated by the minister, commissioner and director concerned to cover up failure in addressing issues plaguing the education sector through meaningful discussions and solutions.
The secretary further pointed out that students who completed class XII examinations in 2023-24 and got enrolled in undergraduate programmes are yet to give' first semester exams while their peers in the same semester and academic year studying in other states have already completed their second semester exams.
Given the faillire of the education minister, commissioner and director to address these issues and formulate effective solutions, the academic session of 2025-26 may witness significant decline in the number of students pursuing master's degree.
Thoithoiba also urged the chief minister to intervene in addressing all issues affecting the student community.
