Human greed poses threat to Pumlen Pat

When the whole world is leaving no stone unturned to save natural ecology including lakes and wetlands spending millions of money, Pumlen Lake, which is one of the important lakes in Manipur, is facing continuous threats from greedy human activities.
Besides, Loktak Lake, the vast hill tracts covered with trees and other plants and numerous small lakes have been playing a vital role in maintaining the eco system of the state and its climatic condition, not only of Manipur but also of other parts of North East.
Among them, Pumlen Lake is one the most important small lakes in Manipur which provides shelter and livelihood to many people and at the same time contributing largely to the environmental situation of the state.
However, continuous encroachment of land around the lake and development of housing area inside the lake area by people of the surrounding area has posed a serious threat to the sustainability of the lake and its eco- system, according to a statement issued by Pumlen Lake Development Organisation.
In the statement, Secretary of the Organsiation Sunil Salam expressed apprehension over the diminishing area and features of the lake and appealed to all concerned to refrain from encroaching upon the lake area and acquiring land pattas illegally.
