Safety tunnels of Imphal-Tupul section connected

With the progress of Northeast Frontier Railway's (NFR) tunnelling works, excavation works for safety tunnel measuring 8.3km of phase-III and IV for Imphal-Tupul section's main tunnel-12 has been completed and connected on Thursday The main tunnel-12 will have a total length of 10.27km and it will be the longest tunnel of NF Railway.
This tunnel will connect the hills to Imphal valley and is the most critical for completion of the Tupul-Imphal section.
Union minister of state for external affairs Dr RK Ran jan, who visited the site on Thursday, witnessed linking of phase-III and phase-IV tunnels and congratulated the railway workers on the achievement.
He said that government targets to bring Imphal on the railway map by the end of this year.
The safety tunnel connected on Thursday is being drilled parallel to the main tunnel-12 and 50 metres apart and this tunnel will help passengers in escaping from the main tunnel-12 at the time of emergency.
Tunnelling works of main tunnel-12 of Tupul-Imphal section is the most crucial and challenging and a total of 7-742km long tunnel has been completed as of now.
This tunnel passes through the most complex geological crete and encountered heavy rainfall, poor geology and other inconveniences during tunnelling works.
Excavation of the tunnel is being done with New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) in addition to 3D monitoring and proactive tunnel support system.
As of now, a total of 48 tunnels measuring 60.09km of the Jiribam-Imphal broad gauge line project have been successfully completed.
