ICAR Manipur Centre celebrates 43rd Institute Foundation Day

Imphal, January 09 2018: The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region celebrated the 43rd Institute Foundation Day of ICAR, Manipur Centre.

In the function, employees who retired during 2016-17 were felicitated in recognition to their services rendered to the ICAR.

Special guest of the programme, AC Sharma, retired plant breeder of the centre advised the scientists to work with dedication to uplift the economy of the farmers.

In his presidential speech, Dr I Meghachandra, joint director, ICAR Manipur highlighted various activities and achievements of the centre.

Till now this research centre has developed many high yielding varieties if rice, tomato, brinjal.

colocasia and turmeric.

The centre has also developed organic production package for pineapple, turmeric and ginger which the State Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation has adopted.

The centre has also produced farmers receiving the Best Farmer Award from the Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation and Department of Agriculture, Government of Manipur.

The centre has standardised lime application in furrow at 0.5 t/ha, biofertilisers and boron application, bamboo drip irrigation and organic production package for passion fruit, integrated nutrient management of broccoli, off season, cultivation of vegetables etc.

To harness the potential of indigenous horticultural crops more than 40 value added products were developed.

The centre has developed many plant protection techniques like, host resistance using detection of ROS, management module for false smut disease of integrated viral disease management module, amongst others.

Participatory demonstration of oyster mushrooms and shiitake mushroom cultivation in different part of Manipur has ben taken up.

The centre has popularised groundnut, lentil, zero tillage of M27 and apiary, QPM and HYVs of maize, jalkund (micro rainwater harvesting unit) .

Under the participatory development of seed production practises for seed village was taken up in nine different districts.

Altogether 1613 farmers in involved covering an area of 546.7ha for oilseeds, 131.85 ha for maize, 258.47 ha for pulses and 530.79 ha for rice.

RC seed bin had been developed to solve the inherent seed storage problem in the humid north east region.

In the fishery and animal science section research like induced breeding for bangana dero (penba) in captivity, the induced breeding of Pangio Pangia, development of short duration aquaculture, use of water hyacinth as substrate for hatching Clarias magur, use of PCR for differentiating commensal and pathogenic and pathogenic Escherichia coli, DNA based detection of food borne bacteria are being undertaken.

Till now the ICAR has organised 22999 trainings/workshops/conferences/field days/awareness programmes.

Its scientists has guided many PG students and published many papers in the journals of international repute.

Many of the scientists at the centre have also won many national and international awards.
