Chief Minister N Biren Singh flagged off 12 GPS-enabled highway patrol vehicles from the Western Gate of Chief Minister's Secretariat, here, on Tuesday.
The patrol vehicles which were flagged off under Phase-Ill, included three each for Tamenglong and Noney districts, and two each for Kang pokpi, Senapati and Tengnoupal districts.
Earlier, five such vehicles for Senapati district and three for Kangpokpi district were flagged off on May 13 in Phase-I while in Phase-IE Tengnoupal district was provided five such vehicles with Tamenglong district receiving two on June 8 and 19 respectively.
Speaking at Tuesday's event, CM N Biren elaborated that the GPS-enabled highway patrol vehicles are being introduced in phased manner to enable quick response from police to any incident that takes place along the National Highways in Manipur's sector.
The location of the patrol vehicles could be tracked from the Police Headquarters.
Stating that the Vehicles could accommodate a mini mum of 10 police personnel, he mentioned the patrol teams would help in preventing threat and extortion of truck and bus drivers by unknown miscreants along the National Highways.
He further maintained that law and or der situation in the state has significantly improved due to the efforts of the police who are performing their duties tirelessly day and night and also due to the support and cooperation of the public.
As such, there is now no need for security convoys for transportation of oil tankers in the state, he said.
While conveying that aim of the government is to ensure welfare and safety of its people, he stated that the government has carried out relevant work on police modernisation to boost the morale of the police and make them people friendly.
Necessary equipment were also provided for the modernization, he maintained and pointed out that 'Meeyamgi Numit' is being conducted in every district including at the district police headquarters to bring better relations between police and public.
The CM also informed that construction of 34 police stations along the Indo-Myanmar border belt from Behiang to Jessami has been initiated and added that with all such initiatives, the state would be able to check and stop illegal immigration and drugs trafficking along the border areas.
Terming the police as protectors of life and property of people, he asked police personnel to be always ready to help the public timely and also, to ensure no damage is caused to the public.
He further appealed to the patrol vehicle teams to use the vehicles with proper maintenance, thinking it as their own property, as government's property is public property.
Director General of Police (in-charge) Christopher Doungel, while delivering his welcome speech, appreciated the Chief Minister for his unwavering support to work taken up by the Police Department and for his initiatives for the welfare of people of the state.
He said that the GPS-enabled highway patrol vehicles would not only aid in checking crimes and extortion, but also act as confidence building measures and help in maintaining a better relation between the police and public.
Tribal Affairs and Hills minister Letpao Haokip, Social Welfare minister Heikham Dingo, Transport minister Khasim Vashum, Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, Manipur Industrial Development Corporation Ltd chairman Kongkham Robindro, Manipur Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation Ltd chairman Khongbantabam Ibomcha, Additional Director General of Police Clay Khongsai, senior police officers and Superintendents of Police also attended the flagged off programme among others.
