Imphal, May 21 2011:
A strong objection against the government's decision to shift Modern College from the existing site at Porompat has come from many civil organisations including student bodies.
A cabinet meeting of the SPF government held on May 12 last had approved to the expansion of JNIMS by shifting Modern College from its present site to the site of Porompat PS after the PS is attached with the Imphal East district police HQ.
Protersters wanted government to re-consider the decision to shift the B-grade college from the present site where it has been for the last 48 years since it was established, M Bimananda, president of Union of Social Upliftment, Khurai, said addressing a press conference today.
Founder principal of Modern College, Akham Rabichandra, retired MCS officer and founder member of the the college, RK Bijoy, former principal of the college, Dr Thoudam Nandababu and former general secretary of AMSU, Ng Devendro attended the press conference.
The president asserted that the Modern College is one of the prestigious colleges among the seven government and 27 private and aided colleges in the state having the highest number of students.
Presently the college has over 1000 students.
The college had produced many medical officers, engineers and administrative officers and its infrastructures have been developed after it enjoyed grants in aids from the UGC.
Development of more infrastructures like the science laboratory, library, and hostel buildings are in progress.
The college has at present a campus of 16.18 acres whereas the proposed site where the college is to be shifted is of only 3 acres only.
On the other hand, the government had already allocated 46 acres of land as campus of the JNIMS, he said and pointed out that the area is much more than the minimum area required for a medical college which is only 25 acres as per the Medical Council of Indias norm.
JNIMS has its own sufficient area for being a medical institute and if government wishes to expand, they can extend the campus by allocating lands available on the northern and eastern side of the institute, he asserted.
Bimananda also appealed to the government on behalf of the civil organisations and student bodies to re-consider the college shifting plan and allow Modern College to stand abreast with JNIMS and also not to give any obstruction in the ongoing infrastructure development work of the college.
