The National Day of Mental Retardation was observed by All Manipur Mentally Handicapped Persons' Welfare Organisation (AMHO) today at BB Paul Mental Development Home, Mongsangei.
AMHO president RK Kirankumar and assistant commissioner (development) Social Welfare department Th Dilipkumar and A Nimai, social worker were on the dais in the function.
Secretary of the AMHO, Y Ibechaobi, in a key note address said that in fact National Day on Mental Retardation was supposed to have been observed on December 8 but due to the prevailing unrest in the state, it has been observed today.
Asserting that BB Paul Mental Development Home, Mongsangei has been running with funds from four projects from the central government, she said a special school, vocational training, samrat (hostel) and diploma education (DE)- special education (SE), cave for the mentally retarded respectively are the projects being currently implement by the home.
Since the funds of the projects were spent on building infrastructure and payment of salary of teachers, so far the home has not been able extend any financial assistance to the inmates, she added.
In the implemention Sarva Shiksa Abhiyan scheme in the state, the mentally retarded students have not been included she alleged.
To acknowledge their handicap the state govt.should take up certain measures since they are also citizens of the country.
A cultural programme performed by the students of BB Paul Mentally Development Home mark the closing of the function.
