Imphal, November 16 2009: Over 250 vehicles including inter-state buses forced to strand at Mao gate bordering Nagaland due to 24-hour highway bandh were escorted to Imphal by the state security force this afternoon.

No vehicles ply on both the Imphal-Mao section of the NH-39 and Imphal-Jiribam section of the NH-53 owing to the 24-hour bandh imposed by the 1997 Primary Teachers DPC Faced Candidates Association.

The association is pressing the state government to declare the results for the interview held around a decade back.

Normal plying of all kinds of vehicles along the two highways of Manipur connecting with other parts of the country was in grinding halt today owing to the 24-hour bandh which commenced from last midnight.

Over 250 vehicles including 98 oil tankers, 15 LPG bulk career tankers (Bullet), 37 loaded trucks and 21 inter-state buses arriving at Mao gate this morning remained stranded there as they were forced to stop from further proceeding by some strike supporters.

Later, security personnel from 2nd MR, all the stranded vehicles have left Mao gate for Imphal, police said.

Convoys of 2nd Manipur Rifles led by an assistant commandant had escorted the vehicles this afternoon at about 2 pm.

They will be arriving Imphal at late night, a police officer here said.

The movement of vehicles along the Imphal-Jiribam section of the NH-53 also suspended owing the 24-hour general strike collided with another 12-hour Tamenglong district bandh imposed jointly by two civil organizations, District Concern Development Association and the Nungba Citizens' Council.

The bandh commenced from 6 am of this morning covered part of the NH-53 lying within the district.

Major portion of the highway is running passing through this district.

The bandh imposed alleging malpractice of civil administration in the district has passed peacefully with positive response from all section of the people of the district, Agui Kamei, chairman of the district Concern Development Association claimed.

On the other hand, most of the vehicle from Moreh along the Indo-Myanmar section of the NH-39 did not arrived Imphal for the day as police stopped them from further proceeding to Imphal from Moreh police check post for overload.

According to a police officer, they stopped the vehicles for overloading as frequent road accident leading to loss of life occurred on this route.
