State Govt serious on Awungshi case, says Gaikhangam

Imphal, June 14 2013 : The Government of Manipur is pressing the Delhi Government to provide the detail reports over the mysterious death of Reingamphi Awungshi from Ukhrul district, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her rented room in B Block, Chirag Delhi on 29 May last, informed Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, who also holds the portfolio of Home, on the floor of the State Assembly today.

He was replying to a Calling Attention Motion moved by Opposition MLA Dr I Ibohalbi, who alleged the steps taken by the state Congress Government in connection with the death of Awungshi are too slow and disappointing.

Gaikhangam said that the State Government is very serious and not at all remaining mum over the death of 21-year old girl Reigamphy Awungshi in South Delhi last month.

The State Government has pressed the Delhi Government to provide full details over the death of Reingamphi Awungshi, and is pressing further.

The Delhi Police has also taken up a case in this regard.

The ase has been shifted from IPC Section 306 to IPC Section 302 and investigations are on, he revealed, adding that the Delhi Police has been further informed to provide a detail report on the progress of the case.

However, as of now, the Delhi police have not been able to arrive at a definite conclusion on the cause of the death, and since the incident took place in another State, the Manipur Government cannot directly handle the case on its own independently.

Nonetheless, the State Government is in constant touch with the Delhi Government and would do whatever is necessary for the deceased family after the case has been solved, Gaikhangam said.

While moving the Calling Attention Motion, MLA Dr I Ibohalbi stated that the State Government should take the case of death of Reingamphi Awungshi very seriously.

The case, though being investigated, is going very slow and the steps being taken by the State Congress Government are too slow and disappointing.

Questioning what steps have been taken by the State Government in connection with the death and what assistance and support will be given to the bereaved family, Dr Ibohalbi alos suggested the possibility of sending a Police Officer from the State to Delhi to speed up the investigation process.

He also pointed out that People from the North East are often subjected to racial profiling in many parts of mainland India and the Government at the Centre knows it very well.
