Imphal, November 29 2010:
When the government of Manipur seems to be embroiled in a battle of factionalism and odds, the BJP has upped its ante by ridiculing the Congress government at the Centre on its abject failure to apprehend and penalize the accused in the recent case of a girl from Mizoram being gang-raped in Delhi.
State's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Mahila Morcha Manipur today staged a joint sit-in-protest within the premises of the BJP office, to voice their outrage against the torture, violence and gang rape of women from the North East which has often happened in Delhi right under the noses of the law enforcing authority.
Slogans and placards registered that " Delhi government failed to protect the chas Similar protest was staged by BJP at Jantar Mantar in Delhi recently, protesting the rise on crimes against NE women in Delhi .
The president of BJP, Manipur State unit, Sh Shantikumar said at the protest site that most of the gang rape victims in the capital of the country are almost always women from NE India who are either students or employees, and asked a pertinent question as to why a city that claims to be metropolitan still grapples with the abject insecurity of women.
This is because Delhi government has not been able to empower women sufficiently and has not been able to ensure the security of women in the capital city, Shantikumar said.
The rhetoric of Delhi being a metropolis and a seat of power with strong intelligence network and the presence of a free press has been exposed, he said, describing the city lurking with predators and the security of its citizens widely compromised.
While the victims are left with nothing to fall back on, the culprits are roaming free.
The Delhi government and Congress-led central government have miserably failed to protect women against gang rapes, particularly women from NE who have been at the receiving end during the past few years, the BJP leader said.
"The culprits of previous cases of rapes have yet to be arrested and punished," the leader BJP added.
In the given scenario, there seems to be no attempt on the part of the security agencies to come up with a policy to preempt further rapes, the BJP leader said, asking the Sheila Dixit government in Delhi to step down on moral grounds.
For the protection and rehabilitation of women from the North East region, BJP has instituted an agency for women called "Sampak Cell" for women students and employees in Delhi .
This is the first of its kind and the Cell is centrally convened by Sunial Deodhar and in the State by P Somorjit.
Family members who have their wards staying in Delhi must provide the cell with their phone numbers and addresses, the BJP leader added.
