Imphal, May 24 2011: With polling to 27 wards of the Imphal Municipal Council set for Wednesday, state police beefed up security in Imphal West and Imphal East district where voting will be held at 241 polling stations.

Over 2262 police personnel including armed personnel are being utilized in the elections for a smooth conduct of the polls.

As per security arrangements of the police, extra personnel are being deployed in hypersensitive polling stations.

According to a source from the state home department, the department in consultation with the state election commission had pointed out 40 of the total 241 polling stations as hypersensitive polling stations, 125 as sensitive and the remaining 76 as normal polling stations.

Out of the 40 hypersensitive polling stations, 14 are in Imphal East district, which has a total of 66 polling stations.

48 of them in this district have been put in the sensitive category with four being declared as normal polling stations.

26 of the hypersensitive polling stations are located in Imphal West district, the authority has put 77 of them in the sensitive category and 72 as normal ones.

This district has a total of 175 polling stations.

Authority is deploying a team of 12 which includes one officer of inspector or sub-inspector rank, six armed police personnel and four VDF and two women constables or home guard personnel in each hypersensitive polling station.

Ten personnel each are being deployed at polling stations which have been categorized as sensitive.

Each team will be led by an Inspector or SI and comprising five armed policemen, three VDF and two women constables or home guard personnel.

Teams made up of seven personnel including three police personnel, two VDF and two women home guard personnel will be detailed in each normal polling station, as per the security arrangement.

Besides the deployment of police personnel in each polling station, mobile teams led by an officer of not below the rank of DSP will conduct patrolling in and around the polling stations during the poll hours which is from 8 am till 4 pm.

Meanwhile, personnel who will conduct the polls have reported to their respective polling stations.

A candidate has already been declared elected uncontested.

Congress is fielding candidates in all the 27 wards, BJP in 10 wards, CPI in four wards, Trinamool Congress in six wards, NCP in 10 wards and MPP and JD (U) in one ward each.

36 independent candidates are also in the fray.
